Focus Kitten
Focus Kitten is a small macOS app that helps you focus with the company of a little kitten. This policy explains, in plain language, what we collect on focuskitten.com and in the app, why, and what we don't.
The short versionYour kitten's name, your room and everything you bought live on your Mac, not on our servers.
We use privacy-friendly analytics to understand how the app is used, and that includes an anonymous count of your progress — level, minutes focused, how full your room is. A random id, no name, no tracking across other apps. You can switch it off in Settings.
If you're visiting from the EU/EEA, nothing is measured until you answer the cookie banner. Accepting also lets Meta (and, once set up, Google Analytics) measure whether ads brought you here; "Only necessary" turns all of that off. Outside the EU/EEA there's no banner — see section 4 for why.
Purchases are processed by Paddle; we never see your card details.
If you got the app from the Mac App Store, Apple handles the purchase instead, and we never see your payment details there either.
Your license key and email are handled by Keygen and Resend, only to activate and deliver your key.
We don't sell your data. Ever. And there are no ads inside the app.

The heart of the app — your kitten's name and personality, your level, focus minutes, coins, room decorations, and your settings — is kept in a file on your Mac. We do not upload that file, back it up to our servers, or have any way to read it. If you delete the app, this data is removed with it. Part of your progress is also counted anonymously in analytics; section 3 says exactly which part.
To understand how people use Focus Kitten, the app sends usage events that aren't tied to your identity to Mixpanel, sent to Mixpanel's EU data center. This covers things like starting and finishing a focus session, unlocking or buying an item, and plan status.
Alongside those events, the app keeps an anonymous profile of where you've got to: your level, total focus minutes, how full your room is, your plan and the days left in your trial. It's held against a random id, not against you — your kitten's name, your email, your license key and anything you type never go into it. You can turn all of this off any time in Settings → Privacy.
focuskitten.com looks at which country you're visiting from (via a small cookie, fk_geo — just the two-letter country code, nothing else) to decide whether it needs to ask first. In the EU/EEA, GDPR/ePrivacy require asking, so nothing is measured until you answer the banner you see on your first visit. Outside the EU/EEA (this mainly means the US, under its opt-out rather than opt-in rules), there's no banner — the same measurement described below starts automatically, and you can still opt out any time by clearing this site's data in your browser.
Where the banner applies, it decides between two things:
The banner itself runs on Silktide's Consent Manager (a cookie-consent tool, not a tracker in its own right). The one thing stored without asking is your answer to that banner (and, everywhere, the fk_geo country cookie that decides whether to ask at all), so you aren't asked again.
If you accepted (or weren't asked) and then buy, the identifiers Meta had set (_fbp, _fbc) and your email address in hashed form are sent to Meta's Conversions API along with the order, so the purchase can be matched to the ad that led to it. Clearing this site's data in your browser resets all of the above, including your answer to the banner.
Purchases made on focuskitten.com are processed by Paddle.com Market Ltd, our reseller and Merchant of Record. Paddle collects your payment details (card, billing address) directly — we never see or store your card number. Paddle shares your order status and email with us so we can issue your license key. Your license key is generated and validated through Keygen using the key itself — no account or password required. We use your email, via Resend, only to send your license key and, if you ask, to recover a lost one.
Sections 5 and 6 describe the version sold on focuskitten.com. If you installed Focus Kitten from the Mac App Store, neither applies to you: Apple is the seller, takes the payment, and manages your subscription and its renewals from your Apple Account. We never see your card details, your Apple Account, your name or your address — Apple only tells the app whether a purchase is valid. There is no license key in that version and no email is needed to use it. What Apple collects is covered by Apple's Privacy Policy.
Focus Kitten does not: show you ads inside the app; sell, rent, or trade your personal data; track what you do in other apps; collect your location, contacts, photos, microphone, or camera; require you to create an account. The app talks to no advertising network at all — the Meta Pixel and Google Analytics described in section 4 live on the website only, gated by the cookie banner where the law requires one, and running automatically only where it doesn't.
Focus Kitten is a general-audience productivity app and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children below the age of digital consent where they live.
On-device data stays until you delete the app. Analytics events are kept in Mixpanel for up to 12 months. What the website stores in your browser (your banner answer, and the device id if you accepted) stays until you clear this site's data. Data you send to Meta is kept under Meta's own retention rules. Purchase/license records for orders made on focuskitten.com are kept for as long as needed to support your license (renewals, recovery, refunds). For Mac App Store purchases we hold no such records at all — they live with Apple.
Depending on where you live (e.g. EU/UK GDPR, CCPA), you may have the right to access, correct, or delete personal data we hold about you. Email hello.focuskitten@gmail.com and we'll help. We never sell your personal information. If you accept ad measurement on the website, passing your visit and order to Meta may count as "sharing for cross-context behavioural advertising" under California law — choosing "Only necessary" on the banner, or clearing this site's data, is how you opt out.
Our service providers — Paddle, Keygen, Resend, Mixpanel, Apple (for Mac App Store purchases), and (for website ad and traffic measurement) Meta and Google — may process data in the EU, UK, and United States, relying on appropriate safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses where required.
If we change how we handle data, we'll update this page and the "Last updated" date above.
