Does the Pomodoro Technique Actually Work? What the Research Says

Where the 25 minutes came from
Francesco Cirillo invented the method as a university student in the late 1980s, using a tomato-shaped kitchen timer. Pomodoro is Italian for tomato. He picked 25 minutes because that was what he could hold at the time, then wrote the method up and it spread. No study produced that number, and no study since has shown 25 minutes beating 20 or 45.
What the evidence does support: breaks
A 2022 meta-analysis in PLOS ONE pooled 22 studies on micro-breaks, meaning pauses of ten minutes or less. Short breaks reliably cut fatigue and raised vigour. The effect on performance came out weaker, and the authors note that recovering from heavy work appears to need longer than ten minutes.
A 2011 experiment in Cognition suggests why breaks work. Ariga and Lleras had people watch for a rare signal over 50 minutes. Accuracy fell over time for every group except the one pulled briefly onto a second task twice during the session. Their reading: attention to a goal fades when the goal never changes, and a short switch reactivates it. The problem looks like habituation rather than a tank running empty.
Where the evidence stops agreeing
Three studies from overlapping research groups compared fixed breaks against breaks students took whenever they wanted. They point in different directions.
- Biwer and colleagues, 2023, 87 students: the fixed-break groups reported less fatigue and distraction and more concentration and motivation than the students choosing their own breaks. Task completion came out the same.
- Smits and colleagues, 2025, 94 students: fatigue climbed faster in the Pomodoro group, and motivation dropped faster in both timed conditions. The authors conclude that none of the three methods deserves to be recommended over the others.
- Göksu and colleagues, 2026, 176 students: the group choosing their own breaks came out ahead on energy, concentration and motivation, and reported less distraction. Reading comprehension scores came out the same.
One question, three answers. What stayed steady across all three is the output: comprehension and task completion barely moved. What changed was how the session felt.
Pros
- The timer decides when to stop, so you spend nothing on deciding. Deciding is itself tiring, and it happens while you are already tired.
- Starting gets easier. Twenty-five minutes is a small promise, and most procrastination happens at the start of a task rather than in the middle.
- Work becomes countable. A day turns into a number you can hold against yesterday.
- The break arrives before exhaustion instead of after it, which is the pattern the meta-analysis supports.
Cons
- The bell lands in the middle of things. Work with a long warm-up pays for every interruption.
- One block length cannot fit every task. Email, code and writing warm up at different speeds.
- Two of the three comparison studies found motivation falling faster on a timer than off it.
- Nothing in the research argues for 25 minutes specifically.
How to run it, if you try it
- Pick the block length from the task: around 25 minutes for admin and email, 45 to 50 for writing or code.
- Name the one thing the block is for before you start it.
- Leave the desk on the break. A break spent on the same screen does little.
- Let a block run long when the work is moving. The rule exists to stop you starting late, not to stop you working.
- Count finished blocks for a week before judging the method. One day tells you nothing.
Who it fits
Timed blocks help most if you sit down at nine, look up at one and cannot say where the morning went, or if the hard part of your day is the first sentence. They help least over deep work with a slow warm-up, and over days cut up by meetings you do not control.
